Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Building Better People

DBT Skills Training with Gemma Bailey

DBT Skills Training is a structured, evidence-based programme that teaches you how to regulate emotions, stay grounded under pressure and communicate clearly, even when you feel overwhelmed. It comes from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) – a highly researched psychological approach that combines mindfulness, behavioural change and practical tools you can use in real life, not just in theory.

This People Building DBT Skills Training is designed both for adults who want better emotional balance in their own lives, and for practitioners, therapists, coaches and wellbeing professionals who want to become DBT-informed and dramatically upgrade their toolkit.

From the very first session, you’ll start to get relief: you’ll understand what’s really happening in your emotional system, you’ll have language for it, and you’ll leave with clear next-step strategies instead of a vague sense that you “should cope better by now.”

Is This DBT Skills Training for You?

For individuals

This programme is for you if any of these feel familiar:

  • You feel things intensely and struggle to “let things go.”

  • Anger, shame or anxiety hang around far longer than the situation deserves.

  • You swing between over-reacting and shutting down, then feel guilty afterwards.

  • Relationships feel fragile: one disagreement can feel like total rejection.

  • You’re exhausted from overthinking and want concrete tools, not more analysis.

You do not need a diagnosis to benefit. DBT skills were originally developed for people with extreme emotional sensitivity, but they are now widely used to help with anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, addictions and burnout.

For practitioners & professionals

This training is ideal if you:

  • Are a counsellor, coach, therapist, educator or wellbeing professional who wants a structured, research-backed framework for working with dysregulated clients.

  • Want to feel more confident when clients present with chronic emotion dysregulation, self-sabotage, anger, people-pleasing or “all or nothing” thinking.

  • Are tired of piecing together random worksheets online and want a coherent, clinically informed syllabus you can trust.

  • Want to be recognised as a DBT-Informed Practitioner (available when you complete all four modules and already practise therapeutically).

What You’ll Learn: The Four DBT Modules

Each module runs for 10 weeks and builds a different pillar of emotional resilience. You can take modules individually or complete the full four-module programme.

Module 1 – Mindfulness

You’ll learn how to:

  • Observe thoughts, emotions and body sensations without being pulled into them.

  • Notice urges (to lash out, shut down, overeat, scroll, etc.) without automatically acting on them.

  • Shift from “emotional mind” or “logic mind” into wise mind – the balanced middle ground Gemma describes as where common sense and self-compassion meet.

  • Build moment-to-moment awareness so you can respond intentionally rather than impulsively.

These mindfulness skills become the foundation for every other DBT strategy you’ll learn.

Module 2 – Distress Tolerance

Life will still throw curveballs. Distress Tolerance gives you crisis-survival tools so those moments don’t destroy your day, your relationships or your self-respect. You’ll learn how to:

  • Stabilise yourself quickly during emotional storms, without self-harm or destructive coping.

  • Use reality-acceptance skills when you can’t change a situation immediately.

  • Apply practical tools such as STOP skills, pros and cons, and “change your body chemistry” strategies Gemma teaches (movement, breathing, posture and physiology).

Module 3 – Emotion Regulation

This is where you get into the mechanics of emotions and how to shift them. You’ll learn how to:

  • Understand and name emotions accurately (including anger, shame, fear and guilt).

  • Check whether an emotion fits the facts of the situation or has become stuck and exaggerated – like the gaming/anger example Gemma uses in her teaching.

  • Use Opposite Action to gently reverse unhelpful urges (e.g. moving from attack to calm, from avoidance to engagement).

  • Reduce emotional vulnerability over time, building more positive emotional experiences and resilience.

Module 4 – Interpersonal Effectiveness

Here you’ll focus on relationships, boundaries and self-respect. You’ll learn how to:

  • Ask clearly for what you need and say no without collapsing into guilt.

  • Handle conflict in a way that protects both the relationship and your own dignity.

  • Apply DBT tools like DEAR MAN, GIVE and FAST – Gemma’s favourite framework for maintaining self-respect (Fair, no unnecessary Apologies, Stick to values, be Truthful).

  • Step out of “doormat” patterns and stop over-apologising, while still staying kind and grounded.

How the Programme Works

  • Format: Live online group training via Zoom (camera-on is encouraged but you can choose your level of visibility).

  • Session length: 90 minutes per week, midday–1:30pm UK time.

  • Structure: Four modules of 10 weeks each – Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness.

  • Replay: All sessions are recorded so you can revisit the content or catch up if you have to miss a week.
  • Materials: You’ll receive detailed worksheets for each module, or the full DBT workbook if you enrol onto the complete programme.
  • Pathways:
Join one module for focused personal development.

Or complete all four modules to be recognised as a DBT-Informed Practitioner (for those already practising therapeutically).

From the very first session, you’ll start applying the skills to your own real-life situations. You’ll walk away with a clearer understanding of your emotional patterns, initial tools to defuse them, and a simple plan for what to practise before the next week – so relief begins immediately, not months down the line.

Why DBT – and Why Learn It Here?

DBT is one of the most extensively researched psychological interventions in modern clinical practice. It has been scientifically validated across hundreds of studies for reducing emotional dysregulation, self-harm, suicidal behaviours and impulsivity, and is now used widely for conditions such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, addictions and burnout.

Learn from a specialist, not a generalist

Gemma Bailey has:

  • Completed British Psychological Society Approved DBT Training.

  • Completed DBT Skills Training with Dr Marsha Linehan, the founder of DBT.

  • Gained an additional DBT Diploma, holding three separate DBT accreditations.

  • Successfully integrated DBT into years of therapeutic and coaching work with complex clients, including those with neurodiversity and long-standing emotion regulation challenges.

You’re not just learning from someone who has read the manual; you’re learning from a specialist who actively uses these skills in real cases and trains other professionals.

Where many generic therapy trainings stay theoretical, this programme is unapologetically practical. You’ll see how DBT is applied to situations like:

  • Children or adults with ASD who struggle to communicate emotions and often move straight from frustration to meltdown.

  • Adults who never speak up, over-apologise and then explode later because resentment has stacked up.

  • Clients whose anger is valid, but whose behaviour in anger keeps damaging relationships or opportunities.

You’ll not only understand the “why” behind these patterns – you’ll have step-by-step tools to change them.

What Makes This Training Different?

  • Dual focus: Every exercise is designed so you can use it for your own emotional wellbeing and (if you are a practitioner) adapt it for your clients.

  • Skills first, diagnosis second: You don’t need to identify with any label. The skills stand alone and are helpful for anyone who feels things deeply.

  • Structured, yet deeply human: You’ll learn robust, evidence-based frameworks, but in a warm, straightforward style that treats you like an equal adult, not a fragile patient.

  • Fast clarity, clear next steps: Each session gives you a defined concept (e.g. “Does this emotion fit the facts?”, “Opposite Action”, “FAST for self-respect”), practised with real examples and supported by worksheets so you know exactly what to try between sessions.

  • Safety and respect: This is skills training, not crisis therapy. You’ll be supported to explore challenges at your pace, with clear boundaries and signposting if you need additional 1:1 support elsewhere.

Investment & Enrolment

Early-Bird Prices (until 2026):

  • £180 per module (10 weeks each; normally £250).

  • £594 for the full four-module course (normally £849).

You can:

  • Book a single module if you want to focus on one area (for example, Emotion Regulation or Interpersonal Effectiveness).

  • Or commit to the complete programme if you want a comprehensive DBT skillset for yourself and/or your clients.

For most practitioners, a single client who benefits from these tools will repay the investment. For individuals, the value is in having lifelong strategies that prevent repeated crises, burnt-out relationships and the cost (emotional and financial) of going round in circles.

If you’re ready to stop “just coping” and start feeling genuinely equipped to handle your emotions – and to support others with theirs – now is the time to learn DBT skills properly.

Choose your path:

  • 👉 Enrol in one DBT module to focus on a specific area.

  • 👉 Enrol in the full four-module DBT Skills Training and become DBT-Informed in your personal life and professional practice.

Reserve your place now and give yourself the relief of knowing that over the next 10–40 weeks, you’ll be steadily building a clear, proven toolkit instead of hoping things will magically get easier.

DBT Skills Training is a structured programme based on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy that teaches four core sets of skills: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. It’s about learning practical tools to manage intense emotions, reduce impulsive behaviour and improve relationships – not just talking about problems.

No. You do not need a diagnosis, and you don’t need to be in crisis. Many participants join because they recognise patterns like emotional overwhelm, burnout, anger, people-pleasing, or “all or nothing” thinking and want solid skills to change those patterns before they escalate. DBT was originally created for complex presentations but is now widely used for anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, addictions and general emotional dysregulation.

Yes. The training is deliberately designed for both personal and professional use. You’ll learn the skills through your own examples, and if you’re already practising therapeutically you’ll also see exactly how to integrate DBT-informed tools into your client work. Full-programme graduates who are existing practitioners can describe themselves as DBT-Informed Practitioners and receive a certificate confirming completion.

Sessions are delivered live online in weekly 90-minute blocks, from midday–1:30pm UK time. If you have to miss a week, you’ll be able to watch the replay and use the worksheets to catch up so you don’t lose momentum.

No. DBT Skills Training is an educational skills programme, not a replacement for individual therapy, crisis services or clinical supervision. Many participants choose to continue 1:1 therapy alongside the course, using DBT skills to make that work more effective. Practitioners should continue to follow their professional body’s supervision requirements.

You won’t be promised miracles – but you can expect to gain a clear understanding of how your emotions work, a language to describe what’s happening, and a set of tools you can practice immediately. Over the weeks, most people notice they recover from emotional upsets more quickly, handle conflict with more steadiness and feel less at the mercy of their moods. Results depend on practice, but the framework you’ll learn is designed to support real-world change, not just insight.
