Nail biting can stem from a long-standing bad habit, or it can manifest as a sign of anxiety or stress. Sometimes, individuals do it without even realising it, while others are fully aware but find themselves unable to stop, often using imperfections in their nails as a reason to keep biting.

The unconscious mind is where all behaviours and habits reside, making it the ideal focus for any alterations. Hypnosis is a powerful tool for influencing the unconscious mind, as it diminishes the alertness of the conscious mind. This creates a space where suggestions can be implanted and accepted more readily, without the usual level of analysis and filtering present in a waking state.

Biting nails can lead to sore fingers and bleeding, even if it’s not a severe habit. Underneath the nails, there are many bacteria, especially on unwashed hands. One type of bacteria, Staphylococcus, can cause illnesses like impetigo and toxic shock.

Surprisingly, nail biting can have negative effects on your teeth. Although nails are composed of keratin, the same substance found in hair, the force required to bite through a nail can lead to dental damage. It’s crucial to be aware of this potential harm and prioritise the well-being of your teeth.

One of the most successful methods I’ve employed in the past to assist a patient in quitting nail biting is hypnotherapy combined with suggestions of feeling queasy whenever the fingers are near the mouth. This not only acts as a deterrent for nail biters but also helps in making the habit more noticeable to the patient. It empowers the patient to decide whether to keep up with the behaviour or not.

Providing clients with options to reduce stress or tension can be crucial in addressing certain behaviours. Introducing techniques like self-hypnosis or hakalau can help induce a profound sense of relaxation as an alternative behaviour.
